Koi variety guide
Sanke Koi Guide
Sanke, also called Taisho Sanke, are white koi with red and black markings. This guide explains how to recognize Sanke and how to separate it from Showa.

What Makes A Sanke
Sanke appreciation begins with the white ground and red pattern, then considers the black markings. The black should support the fish visually rather than overwhelm it.
White Base
Clean white skin gives the red and black markings space to appear clear and well placed.
Red Pattern
The red pattern should carry the visual structure of the koi, similar to how a Kohaku pattern is read.
Black Accent
Black markings should add rhythm and contrast. Too much black can make beginner identification harder.
Sanke Or Showa?
The difference can be subtle. Beginners should compare head markings, black placement, and whether the black feels like accents on white or a deeper part of the body pattern.
- Sanke: white base with red pattern and black accents.
- Showa: black is often more powerful and may appear on the head.
- Use multiple clues instead of one marking.
